Designer in Focus
At Brymaxx, we had the pleasure of interviewing the talented designer behind Sincerely Jen Pattern Company. Jen shared her journey from testing bag patterns to designing her own, as well as her insights into what makes a great bag. Let’s hear directly from her about her process and what inspires her designs!
What is your designer brand?
Sincerely Jen Pattern Company
What was your first pattern? Did you release this or was it for personal use?
The Zipper ID Wallet, a free pattern. It was later updated and re-released as the Zip It Janice Zipper ID Wallet and is still free.
What made you become a bag designer?
I tested bag patterns for a few designers years ago, and I loved trying out new things, seeing what would work and what wouldn’t. I then began using my Silhouette Cameo to create designs for applique. Once I had a good feel for how that software worked, I actually created my first pattern pieces using the Silhouette software.
Could you share your approach to designing a bag?
I generally have an idea in my head of what I want the finished bag to look like. I draft the pieces using Adobe Illustrator, then cut and sew one to see if I like it. From there I will adjust the pieces and make changes as needed.
Have you ever used a template for making a bag?
Yes, I love them for bags that I make over and over again. I prefer to cut with a rotary cutter whenever I can.
What is your definition of a great bag?
My favorite bags are those that come together easily, but look like they are complicated.
