Designer in Focus

We’re delighted to introduce you to the talented designer behind Pink Pony Design! Known for her beautifully functional patterns, we had the pleasure of learning more about her creative journey, design process, and tips for the bag-making community. Here’s what she shared:

What was your first pattern?

The Bia Bag was my first pattern. It started as a personal project but later became a free pattern on my blog.

What inspired you to become a bag designer?

I really wanted to sew bags, so I bought a bunch of bag patterns. However, I quickly grew frustrated because the instructions often assumed a lot of prior knowledge and included few, if any, illustrations or photos to guide the process. After attempting a few patterns and feeling disheartened, I decided to figure things out on my own. I discovered how much I loved dreaming up designs and bringing them to life. When I found myself with extra time and no other business to run, I started Pink Pony Design, and I couldn’t be happier with the decision!

Could you share your approach to designing a bag?

I often start with a need for a specific type or size of bag in my own life. From there, inspiration flows—sometimes sparked by people-watching with my husband. A zipper detail on a sweater or the shape of a shoe can inspire a bag design. Being Swedish, I naturally gravitate toward clean lines and Scandinavian styles, but I’ve recently started embracing "frills and flare" as my style evolves. I also sketch ideas while resting due to chronic illness, so creativity is never in short supply, even if time and energy sometimes are.

Have you ever used a template for making a bag?

Yes, and I loved it! Templates make cutting out so much faster and more convenient. I’d love templates for all my favourite patterns.

What is your definition of a great bag?

A great bag is pretty to look at, practical to wear and use, and fun to make!

Is there anything else you would like to share with our bag-making community?

Don’t be scared, you can do it! Whether it’s zipper facings, gussets, binding, sewing with vinyl, or anything else—just go for it!
